Sir Elton John has created many hit songs and one that stands out to me is "Candle In The Wind" when Princess Diana was killed in a car accident back in 1996 trying to escape relentless paparazzi. Mostly because in my middle school chorus we sang this song at one of our recitals. One of the tear-jerkers during that time for such a great woman that everyone referred to as "The People's Princess". There are other songs like the Disney movie The Lion's King "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" spanning to an R&B take with his down and dirty piano playing in Mary J. Blige's "Deep Inside" sampling from 1974 "Bennie And The Jets". Even though he's a notable virtuoso as a musician, composer, song-writer, and producer selling more than 250 million records in his four-decade career the song didn't completely come together for me.
Ed Sheeran is a young cat at 22, equally representing the English channel. His album + with this lead single "The A Team", is certified quintuple platinum in the UK. That means he's already a household name. His voice was likeable and the piano maestro's was fine too, don't get me wrong. But there were a couple of spots where their vocals didn't smoothly combine that well. To tell you the truth when I first heard the song I didn't like it at all and it was mainly for Elton but after listening to it again with the volume turned up the good qualities came through. Sometimes it takes the right adjustment. They're both special in their own rights. The song is poetic in nature with the subject being a drug-addicted prostitute.
Breathing in snowflakes
Burnt lungs, sour taste
Light's gone, day's end
Struggling to pay rent
Long nights, strange menAnd they say
She's in the Class A Team
Stuck in her daydream
Been this way since eighteen
But lately her face seems
Slowly sinking, wasting
Crumbling like pastries
And they scream
The worst things in life come free to us
Cause we're just under the upper hand
And go mad for a couple grams
And she don't want to go outside tonight
And in a pipe she flies to the Motherland
Or sells love to another man
It's too cold outside
For angels to fly
Angels to flyRipped gloves, raincoat
Tried to swim and stay afloat
Dry house, wet clothes
Loose change, bank notes
Weary-eyed, dry throat
Call girl, no phoneAnd they say
She's in the Class A Team
Stuck in her daydream
Been this way since eighteen
But lately her face seems
Slowly sinking, wasting
Crumbling like pastries
And they scream
The worst things in life come free to us
Cause we're just under the upper hand
And go mad for a couple grams
And she don't want to go outside tonight
And in a pipe she flies to the Motherland
Or sells love to another man
It's too cold outside
For angels to fly
An angel will die
Covered in white
Closed eye
And hoping for a better life
This time, we'll fade out tonight
Straight down the lineAnd they say
She's in the Class A Team
Stuck in her daydream
Been this way since eighteen
But lately her face seems
Slowly sinking, wasting
Crumbling like pastries
They scream
The worst things in life come free to us
And we're all under the upper hand
Go mad for a couple grams
And we don't want to go outside tonight
And in a pipe we fly to the Motherland
Or sell love to another man
It's too cold outside
For angels to fly
Angels to fly
To fly, fly
For angels to fly, to fly, to fly
Or angels to die
