There must be a reason why it is nearly impossible to find a video anywhere of the performance of "Over You"/"Home" with Miranda Lambert and Dierks Bentley from last night's Grammys.
It was definitely not in my top favs list of performances, but I
respect every Artist who performs. It is their dream, they worked hard
for it, and they are fulfilling their legacies; but based upon my
feelings others must feel similarly. Luckily I stumbled upon a shared
video on www.tasteofcountry.com by abelardo silva to re-cap the act with the two country-music stars.
Taste
Of Country's contributing writer Sterling Whitaker's review of last
night's performance descriptively states their viewpoint of how it
turned out and the possible reasons for us, the audience, to take into
consideration.
Though it might not always be apparent to viewers at home, awards shows can be very dodgy for the artists who perform live. That's because they are used to playing in a controlled environment in which they work every night with the same sound and lighting people. By contrast, awards shows throw performers into an unfamiliar environment, and at the mercy of a house lighting director and sound engineer.
From the loudness of the live instrumentation Lambert's
voice tends to be drowned out or masked by it resulting in her trying
to sing louder for her voice to be heard. If I was a performer I
would've been pissed off during music's greatest night to realize I can
barely hear my voice!
Sterling reflects similarly:
[It] was apparent in Sunday night's Grammys performance, particularly for Lambert....as she launched into 'Over You', the band was far too loud in contrast to her voice. She seemed thrown off not only vocally- turning in a singing performance less than what she is capable of.
Even when Bentley
came out it didn't salvage anything. The energy picked up slightly with
his guitar strumming which would've hyped me up a bit if I was Lambert.
Sadly it didn't live up to much and became a rather disconnected and
"easy" listen without much to feel. From what I understand this is not
the first time the country music singers performed together unlike many
of the other acts last night. Standing by each other, they hung on, and
rode out to applause with Bentley's "Home".
