There is an evolution in music videos. The music Artist is realizing the bare bones of what being an A.R.T.I.S.T is ALL about and it's showing very "loudly". Music videos are not just about an Artist boasting and bragging about what he/she has obtained and flashing all their wares. It's not just about the silly, snarky outlook of every day life. Australian music artist Gotye literally expresses Art in a visual representation that truly feels like you're looking at "performance art" or what art on a canvas would look like if it had the face and body of a human being with thoughts on their mind.
In this case, slighted by a love and showing how pissed off he is with a calm, almost dreamily delivery until the chorus that resounds declaratively "You didn't have to cut me off". In 2011 Reaching #1 on Billboard Hot 100, 352, 000,000 astounding views currently on You Tube, and as stated in AustralianTimes.co.uk 'selling more than 10 million units worldwide', explains exactly how it connects with numerous people. Speaking from one's sub conscious, the way he expresses the song is close to what it feels like when you find out someone you care for or love plays with your heart and emotions when you give it honestly and freely to them.
I have to say though, is it the norm to go completely commando or as I like to put it Neh-kid lol ?!? I swear either music Artists are the most brave individuals or it's an excuse to live out their exhibitionistic fantasies...
The minute the video starts playing you're seeing a bare Caucasian foot, then a hairy leg, "our" right side of the torso and arm, the chest, and finally the head! It sure brings a new meaning to baring one's soul! uh hem... D'Angelo Fans "Untitled". I know ya'll know what I'm talking about. And it looks like it's going to be the start of an exceptional New Year 2013 for Gotye, also known as Wouter "Wally" De Backer via Wikipedia, who will be in the running for 3 Grammy Nominations coming February!
Noting that he is equally a song-writer apart from being a singer and multi-instrumental musician is apparent in the phrasing of this particular song. He is definitely telling a story and I can connect with his writing style because I similarly write poetically in this manner. Expressing a moment in time, a feeling, snippets of thoughts. The ease of the music allows his phrasing to extend and for us to listen as if he is telling her exactly how he feels looking directly into her eyes.
Now and then I think of when we were together
Like when you said you felt so happy you could die
I told myself that you were right for me
But felt so lonely in your company
But that was love and it's an ache I still remember
You can get addicted to a certain kinda sadness
Like resignation to the end, always the end
So when we found that we could not make sense
Well you said that we would still be friends
But I'll admit that I was glad that it was over
But you didn't have to cut me off
Make it like it never happened and that we were nothing
I don't even need your love, but you treat me like a stranger
And that feels so rough
No, you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records
And then change your number
Guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know.
Well you said that we would still be friends
But I'll admit that I was glad it was over.
But you didn't have to cut me off
Make it like it never happened and that we were nothing
I don't even need your love, but you treat me like a stranger
And that feels so rough
No, you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records
And then change your number
Guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know.
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
KIMBRA
Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over
But had me believin it was always something that I'd done
But I don't wanna live that way
Reading into every word you say
You said that you could let it go
And I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know
oh oh
But you didn't have to cut me off
Make it like it never happened and that we were nothing
oh
I don't even need your love, but you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough
oh
No you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records
And then you change your number
oh
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Somebody that I used to know
Somebody (now you're just somebody that I used to know)
That I used to know
Somebody that I used to know
Somebody (somebody)
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
That I used to know
I used to know
That I used to know
I used to know
Somebody
BTW did I mention how much I love how both Artists use their bodies as a representation of being "One" with the paint. One of the Flyest artistic moves to shock the eyes of zoned out mainstream custom for sure! He's part of the wall and so is she until she moves away and stands facing him. Awesome contrast in visual art. That's what it means to be an Artist. Stand Out. It doesn't even matter who "gets" it if they ever get it or if they fully appreciate the Brilliance encompassed in the vision. By looking at the video alone from an Artistic perspective I'm like, hell yea, do that d*mn thang! Why not add Fine Arts to Musical Art, as well? Well here you have it in plain sight.
