CLAIRO - I Wouldn't Ask You

The Same Sentiment Over Here Too!

A Lullaby To Entrance & Groove

I’ve never heard a song that could sound so sweet and tender like a lullaby with subtle bass in the background rocking me to sleep like I’m a baby in a cradle while making me want to sway with a drink in my hand in the florescent groove of wavy blue and black lights in a club. The use of production is used with such an expertise to create this variation that it is awe-inspiring and amazing. The simple soft piano keys at the start of the song. Clairo’s simplistic innate singing as if she is speaking directly to me with a melodic lyrical harmony paired with the children’s choir is beautiful to say the least.

I heard the song first on Jimmy Kimmel Live on ABC network not paying entire attention, head down looking at my computer doing something hearing this sweet softness of children from the tv screen, and possibly talking with my mother who was equally not fully paying attention, and unsure herself who was performing and was going to turn the channel. I do recall hearing her say, Who is that? I, of course, had no idea, as with most performers that are making their debut on ABC network Late Night show Jimmy Kimmel Live or have been performing for some time as regular performers we all are familiar with. It took me a couple of days to find out after hearing the words, We could be so strong, in my head that I decided to look for the song and really Listen to what this young girl who in her youthful appearance looks to be 11, 12, or even 13 (as we should know after reading the lyrics is of a mature age); a true compliment being born in this youngest of young generations, was singing.

A part from this jokingly I confused this debuting artist with Universal Music Group who released an EP last year, My Diary 001; with another new-found group I had recently heard for the first time on the daytime tv show ELLEN, Brockhampton “Sugar”. If you have seen this group it is a brilliant influencing combination of different youth singing and rapping together as a collective from Texas. Then I witnessed them AGAIN on Kimmel! The following night on Kimmel they performed this time with a young woman added to this group of guys. I thought possibly Clairo was a featuring guest, because let me remind you I was not paying full attention when she performed on Kimmel. Don’t ask me how I mixed this all up when she had kids singing as her backdrop!
I found her! Having no idea what her name was using the lyrics I heard repeat over and over.

At first listen, paying full attention watching the performance again on YouTube searching using the phrase, We could be so strong, I found her! Having no idea what her name was using the lyrics I heard repeat over and over. It was late around 3 - 4 in the morning, after falling asleep for some time before, and I played the song on my cell phone, with my computer about to crash from no battery life, and the reaction I felt was profound. It was magical and mystifying and I thought what a perfect fit as I’m about to go back to sleep. It is bedtime music, in a sweet calming way in its making. I played it a couple more times before my phone decided I should go to sleep, and cut off from low battery life. The story of my life from wearing out ALL my devices! Ending with listening to this song was definitely not a bad thing, but a lovely dream.

It wasn’t until the wee hours of the night 3 am of Friday September 13, did I decide to look up the lyrics and really see if the song was as simplistic as it sounded, and boy was I put in check. There is truly depth in the song-writing. How I realized it was truly an adult-song just from the single placement of f--k that was cut from the Live Kimmel performance version. Strangely; from clean to explicit it isn’t an abrasive point of view using the word like in some songs deliberately standing out.

Her vocals send an innocently, mild, softness with the depth of her delivery. You hear it but it flows like water when listening to the entirety of each phrase captivating your ears and mind. If I had to choose which I like more, the studio or live version, both delivered. Of course everything is made “perfectly” on the album for release. Nothing less is expected there. The selected children are adorable with the inclusiveness of their diversity in gender and race. Singing in pairs, their little hearts out. Their voices with Clairo as One. That’s what grabbed me the most. Her ability to sing on her own and to meld with the children’s voices sounding like one composition.

And let’s not forget the 2nd half of the song where it switches to a hip-bass thumping slow groove over the same lullaby tunes that would attract anyone who appreciates R&B, similar to the crooning vocals of artists from the early 90’s. I can surely dig it. Stay tuned to reviews on the rest of her August 2 released album!

I wouldn't ask you to take care of me
Oh, and I wouldn't ask you to take care of me
I wouldn't ask you to take care of me
Oh, and I wouldn't ask you to take care of me (I think I'm losing you)

Sores appear 'round my neck, don't get close to me
Ask about your life, still in the nose-bleeds?
Laying in your bed, call it intimacy
Wish I could get past the security
Wonder why I wake up living in a made-up
Dream of you and I, together there
Baby, wake the fuck up
Time for you to grow up
Don't you know that life is rarely ever fair?

I wouldn't ask you to take care of me
Oh, and I wouldn't ask you to take care of me
I wouldn't ask you to take care of me
Oh, and I wouldn't ask you to take care of me

Tell you how I feel, I keep it real clean
Lock hanging 'round my neck, you don't get a key
Come a little closer, I'll show you what I mean
Oh, boy, no, it's all for me
Ice cold, baby, I'm ice cold
You're the only one who could make me thaw
Ice cold, baby, I'm ice cold
You're the only one who could make me thaw

I wouldn't ask you to take care of me
Oh, I wouldn't ask you to take care of me
I wouldn't ask you to take care of me
Oh, I wouldn't ask you to take care of me
I wouldn't ask you to take care of me
Oh, I wouldn't ask you to take care of me
I wouldn't ask you to take care of me
Oh, I wouldn't ask you to take care of me

I wouldn't ask you, baby
I wouldn't ask you, baby
To be the one I love
To be the one I love, I love
We could be
We could be so strong
We'll be alright, we'll be alright
We could be so strong
We'll be alright, we'll be alright
We could be so strong
We'll be alright, we'll be alright
Caught me by surprise
Everything I need in my life
I wanna call you mine
I wanna be intertwined
We could be so strong
We'll be alright, we'll be alright
We could be so strong
We'll be alright, we'll be alright
We could be so strong
We'll be alright, we'll be alright
Feels like I've known you for so long
Without you, I don't feel strong
Feels like I've known you for so long
Without you, I don't feel so strong
So strong
